After the fatal streak of hurricanes that ransacked Haiti in the summer of 2008, Gonaives, the town that was hit, the hardest, had about 650,000 people affected. As a result, SAS board members and volunteers went onsite to deliver support and to personally deliver donations made from friends and family across the globe.
SAS joined forces with a local Haitian organization called ODEM, an organization based in Gonaives that instills hard work to the community’s youth with jobs such as ironsmith and plumbing while aiding them to become self-sufficient in their future.
In the past few months beforehand, SAS and individuals residing in the United States collected container loads of goods and supplies for these hurricane victims. Drives were held, children collected from their schools and businesses sponsored our efforts in the collection process. Donations such as clothes, home goods, food, medical and children’s supplies were received. Volunteers participated in the sorting and packing processes as SAS received these goods.
Upon arrival in Haiti, SAS collaborated with ODEM who were quietly planning a relief distribution for the local youth and some of the victims that had still not received any aid in the area. From the SAS container, 500 kits were made and distributed to 500 grateful and surprised children of Gonaives.

We thank all of SAS friends and family that donated, collected and distributed for this mission.
